Question: What would you tell an incoming freshman about ENC 1101 and/or ENC 1102? What would you suggest that they do to prepare for and succeed in these classes? What do you wish you had known?

Answer in a paragraph, or 4-7 sentences.

Coming into college was nothing but a huge learning experience. Not only because obviously I was learning new things but I had to learn how to adapt to the college atmosphere. At first it was difficult because I had to become much more independent and also I had to stay on top of my work because i didn’t have teachers breathing down my neck about homework.

This leads me to my first bit of advise about ENC1101: Make sure you stay on top of your work. First semester i was struggling at first because I had my poor high school work ethic and would procrastinate all my papers leaving me little or no time for revision. This little or no revision led to stupid grammatical errors and spelling errors which in return would hurt my overall grade. So as long as you dont procrastinate and stay on top of your due dates you’ll find writing the papers more enjoyable.

Another tip I have for incoming freshman is; don’t be afraid to ask your professors for help on an assignment or even for them to revise your paper. Professors aren’t going to bash you and make fun of your paper if it isn’t as strong as you would like it too be so don’t be afraid to ask. The least you could get out of it is a better paper which then leads to a better overall grade. Also don’t be afraid to take suggestions from your classmates during peer-review days. Sometimes different point of view’s on a subject could give you more ideas to embellish on your topic.

Lastly in ENC1101 and 1102, you must know how to use FAU library’s online database. You will be asked to do plenty of research from it, and if you are unable to then you won’t be able to write your papers correctly resulting in poor grades. Make sure you pay attention in class when your professor is showing how to do it because it can get a bit tricky.

Overall I have learned a lot from these courses and they have made me a stronger writer but if i had this advise before going into it believe i could have gotten better grades and i wouldn’t have been as stressed
